Learn game design concepts and develop practical skills in computer and mobile game design. Use fundamental design concepts and tools to build a playable game environment in the Unity game-engine.  

A great course for experienced artists and designers wanting to work in game design roles. You’ll learn game design practical skills, concepts, and software to create your own game from scratch. 

What you'll learn

This module provides an understanding of essential design and development concepts, in and around games and game development. You’ll learn the tools to create your own game, built in the Unity Editor Interface.  

  • Understand Game Design documents 

  • Unity Editor Interface 

  • 2D Level Design with Sprites 

  • 3D Level Design with Geometry & Terrain 

  • Lighting & Materials 

  • Familiarity with game-centered language

Software: Unity Game Developer (free for personal use)

Equipment: For optimal performance when studying remotely, we recommend: 

  • Your computer is up to date (ensure you have the latest version of the necessary plug-ins, drivers, bug fixes and security updates) 

  • You have reliable internet speed and connection 

  • A webcam and microphone 

  • Do not use a Chromebook - Chromebooks are not intended for heavy-duty processing such as Adobe Creative Cloud products or rendering software.

International Students: $1,575.00 tuition fee + $447.50 registration fee (including GST)*

Learners will be eligible to enter this micro-credential if they:  

  • Are at least 16 years old, and  

  • Have basic computer skills and an interest in game design  

  • Hold NCEA Level 2 or equivalent evidence that they have the ability to succeed in the micro-credential  

Students with English as a second language require IELTS 5.5 (General or Academic) with no band lower than 5.0.
