Do you dream about working in fashion, film, television or theatre? Want to see your makeup designs on the big screen?

A qualification in makeup design is the first step to making your dreams come true. The industry is highly creative and technical, with a wide range of career opportunities available worldwide to qualified makeup artists.

This 16 Week course will provide you with all the skills and technical know-how to assess a client’s skin and apply a range of makeup looks. You’ll graduate prepared for a job with a top cosmetic house or to work as an entry level makeup artist.

What you'll learn

Perfect the art of providing a skin consultation and advise a client on a range of different cosmetics.

Transform a client into a blushing bride, give a client a natural “no makeup” look or transform them with a dramatic night look.

You are your most important asset. Learn to sell yourself with networking and communication skills, and sales techniques.

Build your brand as a makeup artist, with hands-on training in looks from day to night, photographic to corrective, special occasion to artistry effects. Adapt and evolve your own signature looks by practicing on yourself and your classmates. You’ll graduate with a portfolio of work to wow prospective clients.

The World of Cosmetics

You’ll begin by learning about a wide range of products, services and techniques in makeup and skin care. You will gain knowledge in skincare, eye cosmetics, lip cosmetics and simple artistry techniques to express character as well as introductory makeup techniques to meet client needs.

Skincare Essentials

This module provides you with the opportunity to master skincare and build your knowledge in skin structures and different skin types. You will learn introductory skills in complementary services such as hair, lashes, and brows.

Professional Makeup Services and Counter Experience

The focus of this modules shifts from skincare to makeup, and you will begin applying a range of different makeups while building your communication and consulting skills.

Special Occasion Makeup

Through this module you will engage in design and application of makeup for a range of special occasions. You will demonstrate your knowledge of makeup styles and techniques from day to glamour looks as well as bridal hair and makeup. You will also gain communication skills for planning and implementing photoshoots.

Career Opportunities

You will have the skills to prepare skin for makeup application, create a range of makeup services, and create total looks for different medias including fashion photographic and fashion catwalk work.

Once you have graduated you can seek employment as a makeup artist in the following industries:

  • Counter cosmetics
  • Bridal and special occasion makeup
  • Fashion
  • Cosmetic consultancy

Fees

Domestic

You may be eligible for fees free study! If so, the below fees and costs will not apply to you. Refer to the website www.feesfree.govt.nz to check if you are eligible, as course fees are paid up to a maximum of $12,000.

  • Tuition Fee: $8,410
  • Compulsory course cost: $559

Study free with Youth Guarantee 

If you are aged 16 to 19 and looking for a course where you can pick up some practical skills then the Youth Guarantee scheme gives you the chance to study free.

Places in this programme are limited and often fill really quickly. To avoid disappointment it is best to get your application in as soon as possible! 

Who is eligible?

To qualify for study under the Youth Guarantee scheme, you must:

  • Be a NZ citizen or permanent resident.
  • Be 16 to 19 years of age before the start of the course.*
  • Be prepared to study full-time.
  • Complete an application form for this course.
  • Be successful in the Youth Guarantee funding chat – a student recruitment advisor will be in touch.

*15 year olds who hold ministry-approved early exemption from their school may also be eligible. This exemption must be in place before the course starts.

International

  • Tuition Fee: $12,300 (NZD)
  • Course Related Costs: $750 (NZD)

Entry Requirements

Entry is open to beginners and all applicants are considered however you must:

  • Domestic applicants must be at least 16 years old.
  • Demonstrate proficient use and understanding of spoken and written English.
  • Have NCEA Level 1 (Year 11).
  • International applicants must be at least 18 years old. International applicants must also have an IELTs General or Academic score of 5, with no band score lower than 5.
